These rules are intended to facilitate appropriate and efficient use of the computer network at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School. For the purpose of this document, “the school network”, “network” and “computers” refer to all computer hardware, software, file, print, email, intranet services as well as the internet access provided by the school. Students and staff agree, by their preparedness to use the school's computer network, to abide by all of the following rules and accept, if any violation of these rules does occur, that network access privileges may be withdrawn. The “Rules of the School”, the Student Code of Conduct and school policies, eg the Policy on Harassment apply equally to work done on the network. The following rules apply to all users.

  • The school network is provided for and limited to educational uses only . The school retains the right to monitor, edit or delete any files that it considers necessary.
  • Network users must not attempt to gain access to inappropriate material, neither audible nor visual, which would be considered offensive, dangerous or controversial by other users, teachers or parents. If inappropriate material is encountered, its location should be reported immediately to a supervising teacher. The network is monitored for inappropriate use.
  • Inappropriate material must not be placed onto or sent via the network. E-mail must not be used to send unsolicited, unwanted or inappropriate material.
  • The school's computers and network must not be used to access, store, transfer or manipulate copyright music, movies, video, television or software.

  • Personal passwords or the password of another person should not be disclosed to others.
  • Network users must not attempt to gain entry to or use any part of the network except for the area assigned to them by the school.
  • Network users must log off prior to leaving the computer. Failure to do so will leave your personal work open to others.

In this case the software must be from a trusted site and must be scanned for viruses immediately.
  • Do not copy or install any software onto the school's computers.
  • All disks and portable drives such as USB drives, must be scanned for viruses prior to being used. Seek help from a supervising teacher if necessary.
